Install and update the extensions

These extensions are downloaded from this website and loaded manually into Chrome or Edge. There is no one-click install and no automatic update, because they are not in a browser store.

What Developer mode is

Chrome and Edge normally install extensions only from their own stores. Developer mode is a switch on the extensions page that also lets you load an extension from a folder on your computer. It is how every extension is tested before it is published.

  • It only affects extensions you load yourself this way. It does not change websites or other extensions.
  • Only load extensions from sources you trust, and check the SHA-256 value (see below) matches the one shown next to the download.
  • Your browser may show a notice at startup that you have developer-mode extensions. That is expected.
  • Extensions loaded this way are not updated by the browser. See updating.

Install in Google Chrome

  1. Download the ZIP for the extension you want, from its page or the table above.
  2. Extract the ZIP to a folder you will keep, for example Documents/AnyTool Extensions/anytool-screenshot-0.1.0. On Windows, right-click the file and choose Extract All. On a Mac, double-click it. The folder you pick must contain manifest.json directly inside it.
  3. Open chrome://extensions in a new tab (type it in the address bar).
  4. Turn on Developer mode with the switch in the top-right corner.
  5. Click Load unpacked, then select the extracted folder (the one containing manifest.json) and confirm.
  6. Click the puzzle-piece Extensions button in the toolbar, and choose the pin icon beside the extension so its icon stays visible.

A welcome tab opens once when the extension is first installed. It does not open again when you reload or update it.

Install in Microsoft Edge

  1. Download and extract the ZIP exactly as above, to a folder you will keep.
  2. Open edge://extensions in a new tab.
  3. Turn on Developer mode with the toggle in the left sidebar.
  4. Click Load unpacked, then select the extracted folder (the one containing manifest.json).
  5. Click the Extensions button (puzzle piece) in the toolbar and choose the eye icon, Show in toolbar, beside the extension.

Keep the folder

Chrome and Edge run the extension directly from the folder you loaded. If you move or delete that folder, the extension stops working and you will need to load it again.

Verify a download (optional)

Compare the SHA-256 of the file you downloaded with the value shown next to it.

  • macOS or Linux: shasum -a 256 anytool-screenshot-0.1.0.zip
  • Windows PowerShell: Get-FileHash anytool-screenshot-0.1.0.zip -Algorithm SHA256

Checksums for every release are also listed in SHA256SUMS.txt.

Update manually

Updates are not automatic. Check the version on the extension's page against the version on its card in the extensions page. To update:

  1. Download the new ZIP and extract it. Each version has its own file name, so nothing is overwritten.
  2. Either replace the contents of your existing extension folder with the new files, or keep the new folder.
  3. Open chrome://extensions or edge://extensions. If you replaced the files in the same folder, click the reload (circular arrow) button on the extension's card.
  4. If you used a new folder, remove the old version with Remove, then use Load unpacked on the new folder.
  5. Confirm the version shown on the extension's card matches the new release.

Reloading or updating never opens a welcome tab. Your settings are not affected, because the extensions store none.

Remove an extension

On the extensions page, choose Remove on its card. Captures and extracted data are held only while their tab is open, so there is nothing else to clean up.

If something goes wrong

  • Manifest file is missing or unreadable. You selected a folder one level too high or low. Select the folder that directly contains manifest.json.
  • Developer mode switch is missing or locked. Your computer may be managed by an organization that restricts extensions. Ask your administrator.
  • The extension disappeared after moving files. Load it again from its new location.
